Reinstalling Communications

These instructions only apply to Windows 95 & 98. This activity is not necessary on Windows 2000 or XP systems.

You will need your Windows 95 or 98 CD-ROM, and to close any programs that are open before continuing.

1. Double click the My Computer icon on your desktop.

2. Double click on Control Panel.

3. Double click on Add/Remove Programs.

4. Click on Windows Setup.

5. Remove the Tick from Communications.

6. Click on OK.

7. Double click on Networks.

8. If you are not connected to any other computers ie. on a Local Area Network, remove everything in the Components list by clicking once on each item, then on Remove.

9. Click on OK and then Yes to restart your computer.

10. When your computer is rebooted, double click the My Computer icon on your desktop.

11. Double click on Control Panel.

12. Double click on Add/Remove Programs.

13. Click on Windows Setup.

14. Click once on Communications then click once on the Details button.

15. Put a tick in the box next to Dial Up Networking.

16. Click on OK then OK again.

17. Once the files have been copied from your Windows 95 or 98 CD-ROM, double click on Networks. There should be nothing in this list.

18. Click Add, then Adapter and Add.

19. Click on Microsoft in the left list.

20. Click on Dial Up Adapter in the right list, then click OK.

21. If this hasn't added Client for Microsoft Networks, click on Add, then click on Client and Add. Select Microsoft from the left list, then click on Client For Microsoft Networks from the right list. Click OK.

22. If there is anything more than Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial Up Adapter and TCP/IP, remove them.

23. Click on TCP/IP once and then click on Properties.

24. IP Address should be on Obtain an IP address Automatically.

25. Click on WINS Configuration on the top, select Disable WINS Configuration.

26. Click on Gateway at the top, there should be nothing on either of the 2 fields, if there is anything in Installed Gateways then click on each item then on Remove.

27. Click on DNS Configuration, select Disable DNS then click OK and OK.

28. Again this will ask you to Restart your computer, click on OK or Yes.
